One of the most talented landscapists of Rome
Gaspard Dughet (also known as Gaspard Poussin, Gaspar Poussin, or The Guaspre) was born in Rome in 1615 and in 1630 became the brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin who married his sister, Anne-Marie Dughet.
Son of Jacques Dughet, the French baker who released Nicolas Poussin from hospital when he was sick, he was welcomed by the artist in his studio from 1631-1632, and became his favourite pupil… then one of the greatest landscapists of the century, according to Thuillier.
Passionate about hunting and nature, and among one of the favorite artists of Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna Prince, an important collector of landscapes of the Eternal City, he is the author of the frescoes in Palazzo Colonna in Rome, among the works of Annibale Carracci, Guido Reni and Claude Lorrain.
His vision of the ideal landscape, more realistic, more dramatic, Nicolas Poussin boost until the end of his days. It is considered the inventor of a new genre, the landscape of storm.
