While one cannot pretend that he is of quite the same stature as the other two, nevertheless for England in the eighteenth century he was equally important: there were far more “Gaspars” than “Claudes” in English collections; his influence upon native painters was perhaps the greater, and when the merits of “classical landscape” were extolled, it was “Gaspar” as much as Claude that English cognoscenti had in mind.” (extract from the preface of the exhibition catalogue by Fredk W.
